An inviting environment for the ideal work-life balance
In addition to its unspoiled natural environment and low cost of living, the many advantages of Carinthia also include affordable housing and high-quality leisure time. Skilled workers, entrepreneurs and students can expect an unparalleled quality of life away from the working day. People living in Carinthia can reach Vienna in just under three hours and Ljubljana or Venice even quicker. Many popular seaside destinations are also within easy reach, and Carinthia’s mountains and lakes offer numerous opportunities for recreation and enjoyment.
Carinthia’s natural environment
Landscape, geography and climate
Carinthia’s many assets include its unspoiled natural environment. Have you heard about the 96-square-kilometre nature reserve in the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve or the impressive Karawanken mountain range? More than 200 lakes with drinking water quality invite you to relax and enjoy. Carinthia’s location in close proximity to Italy and Slovenia opens up new perspectives and connections, and not just geographically.
Versatile and inviting
Visitors to Austria’s southernmost province experience a slower pace of life, slow food and people who have decided to work and live surrounded by an impressive landscape. Carinthia combines an above-average income with a high quality of life, making it an ideal environment for the perfect work-life balance. Find out more here.
Room for new perspectives
Affordable cost of living
There are many “affordable” aspects to life in Austria and especially in Carinthia. Renting an apartment in the city centre costs an average of 858 euros – in Munich, you can expect to pay almost three times as much for the same apartment.
Life in Carinthia is quite affordable, especially for young families. A comparison of the cost of living shows that a place in a kindergarten in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee costs less than half that of a comparable kindergarten in Munich.
Clean water is increasingly becoming the currency of modern life. In Austria/Carinthia, 1,000 litres of the purest drinking water costs only about 1.80 euros – about a quarter less than in New York.

Precious:
Water as a resource
1,270 standing bodies of water, 8,000 kilometres of rivers, 60 mineral springs and 43 glaciers – few regions in Austria have as much water as Carinthia. There are also many lakes with drinking water quality: the four largest and most famous are the sophisticated Wörthersee, the mysterious Millstätter See, the Ossiacher See with its fantastic mountain backdrop and the Weissensee with its untouched nature. Thanks to its location in the Alpine-Adriatic region south of the Alps, Carinthia also has an attractive climate.
Hiking and skiing
In addition to its lakes, Carinthia is also known for its mountains. They invite you to hike from spring to autumn and to go skiing, snowboarding, freeriding or ski touring in winter – and usually well into spring: whether it’s a high-alpine descent or a friendly family slope, a pristine deep-snow slope or a cool halfpipe, the possibilities are endless. And there is always a breathtaking view of Carinthia’s landscape and beautiful natural environment. This can also be discovered on one of the many wonderful hiking trails, especially on guided tours in the nature, biosphere and national parks.

2,184 hours of sunshine
per year. While the sun shines around 1,750 hours in Munich and 1,580 hours in Hamburg, Carinthia tops the scores with many places that offer even more sun. Some of them, with over 2,000 hours of sunshine, will ensure that you feel comfortable and welcome.
