Overcoming the Language Barrier to Build a Career in Carinthia
For those arriving from abroad, finding a job in Carinthia may initially seem challenging, especially due to the foreign language and administrative procedures. Alexander Gärtner, EURES consultant at AMS Carinthia, explains how support programmes, personalised guidance and language training help newcomers integrate and build a solid professional path.
Could you introduce yourself and explain how your organisation helps to match labour demand and supply in Carinthia?
Alexander: My name is Alexander Gärtner, I am an EURES Adviser working for the public employment service in Carinthia (AMS Carinthia). My role is to connect employers in Carinthia with skilled workers from across the EU and EEA. We provide information, guidance and job-matching services to help international jobseekers find suitable positions in the region. By cooperating closely with companies and EURES Advisers from all over Europe, we create cross-border employment opportunities and support smooth integration into the local labour market.
In your experience, what are the biggest challenges people face when looking for work here, especially those coming from abroad?
Alexander: One of the biggest challenges for people coming from abroad is the language barrier, as many jobs require at least basic German skills. Understanding local labour market conditions and adapting to the Austrian work culture can also be difficult. Additionally, dealing with administrative procedures — such as residence registration, recognition of qualifications, or housing — can be overwhelming. We help overcome these barriers by offering personalised counselling, providing information on living and working in Carinthia, and connecting jobseekers with supportive local networks.
What kinds of programmes or forms of support can help individuals get started in the job market and advance their careers in Carinthia?
Alexander: AMS Carinthia and EURES offer various programmes and services to support people entering the local job market. These include personalised job placement, training opportunities such as internships, and financial assistance for mobility or language learning. One key initiative is the Targeted Mobility Scheme (TMS), a European programme run in cooperation with Sweden, which helps EU citizens find work or apprenticeships abroad. Through TMS, participants can receive financial support for interviews, relocation or language courses. Together, these measures help newcomers integrate smoothly and build sustainable careers in Carinthia.
