Rising research quota - great perspectives
Carinthia is on the fast lane in all areas, from R&D to digitalisation, business and industry and all the way to quality of life.
In addition to its technology parks, research initiatives and higher education research institutions, Carinthia is also home to other important centres of excellence for research and technology. See below for an overview with related links – from the unique 5G research lab to ambitious AI projects, Carinthia is not just a natural, but also a research paradise!
Since it was first founded in 2008, Fraunhofer Austria Research GmbH has been supporting businesses of all sizes and industries as an independent partner, sharing know-how and expertise. The locations in Vienna, Graz and Wattens, which employ over 70 people, were joined by a new site on 1 October 2019, when the innovation centre “Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence”– KI4LIFE for short– opened its doors in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. A core team of scientists is already working to provide concrete solutions to support Carinthian businesses in mastering the challenges that come with digitalisation. The goal is to close the gap between industry and academic research with application-orientated research activities.
This non-profit organisation was founded in 2008 and is based on the technology campus Lakeside Science & Technology Park in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Its research focuses on future technologies, with an emphasis on applications and improvements of self-organisation methods in fields such as the Internet of Things, robotics, production and transport.
Most research projects are conducted in cooperation with businesses such as Airbus, Infineon Technologies Austria, SKIDATA, SOFTEAM and Treibacher Industrie. Carinthia has already made an international name for itself in drone research in particular, largely thanks to Klagenfurt University and the Lakeside Labs GmbH.
As a COMET K1 centre, ASSIC is one of Austria’s most distinguished centres of excellence, focusing on the intelligent systems integration of micro- and nano-components to make products and processes even more precise, functional and efficient. Research areas include the development of components, micro-modules and intelligent systems as well as the optimisation of process technologies.
Inspiring enthusiasm for science and research, enabling active participation, awakening inventive talent and a zest for new discoveries: the goals of the Educational Lab in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee include all these and more. New types of learning, training and further education are researched, developed, tested and implemented here. The main focus lies on the MINT subjects (mathematics, IT, natural science and technology), research and development, entrepreneurship and internationalism (culture, languages). This “innovative learning environment” also promotes and develops the creativity of children, young people and adults.
This Austrian research institute of European standing operates independent departments that are responsible for their own performance (Energy, Mobility, Health & Environment, Safety & Security and Foresight & Policy Development) and work closely with related industries and customers in public institutions, with the goal of providing added value through innovation and new technologies. In Carinthia, the AIT is based in the Lakeside Science & Technology Park.
Carinthia is on the fast lane in all areas, from R&D to digitalisation, business and industry and all the way to quality of life.
All Carinthian research institutions are model examples of the cooperative environment in which business, research and politics operate. There is an active commitment to seeking out collaborations in promising research areas in order to come up with sustainable solutions and fruitful research.
Carinthia is home to cutting-edge technology and research on all levels. A significant factor in this are leading companies with an international presence, and the way they harmoniously interact with many SMEs with a research slant.
The core areas of research in Carinthia are micro-electronics, information and communication technology, metalworking and processing, renewable energy and environmental technology as well as wood and paper.
Carinthia’s politicians are keen on furthering the positive economic development in the province by initiating cooperation projects with visionary researchers.
