In 1995, 17 municipalities from the districts of Feldkirchen, St. Veit, Villach-Land and Spittal joined forces in the Timber Road’s founding municipality of Gnesau. Their aim was to improve the value chain of forest and wood in connection with the commercial economy, forest farmers, timber harvesters and hauliers, sawmillers, carpenters, joiners and even tourism companies. Since then, over 1,800 private and public timber construction projects with a volume of over 7 million euros have been managed and supported with co-financed funding.

When it comes to education the region has dedicated itself to a topic that could not be more future-oriented: The Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Feldkirchen is dedicated exclusively to the sectors health and social services. The bandwidth ranges from “social work” to “biomedical analysis” – combined with an active focus on practical experience. The Diakonie de La Tour public hospital in Waiern is located above the district capital Feldkirchen. Around 100 employees look after 62 patients in three departments: internal medicine, acute geriatrics and psychosomatics.
