The technology parks in the Carinthian capital of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee and in the city of Villach have developed into leading Austrian innovation centres in recent years. Both of them are success models for the cooperation of businesses with research and educational facilities. From robotics to renewable energies, Carinthia is actively researching the future.

Technology campus Lakeside Science & Technology Park

Carinthia’s largest technology park, located directly next to the University of Klagenfurt and in the immediate vicinity of Lake Wörthersee, has grown into a leading centre for information and communication technologies.
The campus is a space for innovation that is used by renowned companies and three extramural research institutions (Joanneum Research, Lakeside Labs, AIT-Austrian Institute for Technology) as well as build!, the Carinthian start-up incubator. Gründerzentrum Kärnten.
The Lakeside Park is also home to the Educational Labs, an education project for MINT subjects that is unique in Europe. This innovative learning environment promotes and develops the creativity of children, young people and adults and includes an event centre.
Austria’s latest indoor drone flying arena
In cooperation with the Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt, the Joanneum Research Robotics Institute and the Lakeside Labs, Austria’s newest indoor drone flying arena was set up at the Lakeside Science & Technology Park, with the goal of researching the swarm intelligence of drones and the interplay of human-drone-robot sequences. In October 2019, the 5G Playground Carinthia was opened, a 5G research lab that is unique in Austria and focuses on the application-orientated research and development of 5G applications and products.
Making room for research: 30 million for more facilities
Until the end of 2020, an additional 9,000m2 will be made available for innovation and research. A multi-storey car park will also be added. In total, this investment amounts to an additional 30 million Euro and will create more room for innovative and technology-focused companies, start-ups, scale-ups and research institutes.

High Tech Campus: Villach Science & Technology Area

The High Tech Campus is located right next to the Drau river and focuses on business, research and development as well as further education. Areas of emphasis include hardware for microelectronics, mechatronics, microsystems, mechanical engineering, renewable energies, geo-information, information and communication technologies. In addition to numerous companies, this highly international campus also houses the Silicon Alps Cluster, the research lab of the
Silicon Austria Labs and the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences.
For founders, start-ups and scale-ups, a local office of the build! business incubator is available for individual support and assistance. The High Tech Campus also includes innovation facilities such as the Smart Lab, the Innovation Workshop and the Start-Up Garage of the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences. Here, too, all signs point towards investment and expansion: In total, approximately 12 million Euro will be invested into expanding the facilities.
